Our Mission

Underserved communities in the United States and Africa

Our Story

Mission:

Our mission is to improve the quality of healthcare in the low socioeconomic communities in both the united states and Africa through improving medical literacy and awareness. This medical literacy is focused on general health screenings such as diabetes, hypertension and age-appropriate-screenings. We strongly believe that the more people are informed about their health, the better they will take care of themselves and adhere to medical advice and medical provider guidance.

Vision:

Our vision is to empower these low socioeconomic communities with strong medical awareness and basic health literacy. Thereby, building a community with stronger health standards and more efficient and independent medical management.

Purpose:

Jamii is a nonprofit organization founded by two medical doctors who have witnessed low socioeconomic communities suffer from inefficient personal healthcare which primarily is due poor medical illiteracy and general health awareness. We have seen the impact that this has imposed on the individuals from these low socioeconomic communities.

The people often have poor understanding of their medical conditions, required screenings and how to manage their health. This often lead to poor medical compliance and physician patient relationships. Thus, leading to poorly managed medical conditions that result in worsening of disease complications and eventual in increase in morbidity & mortality.

Also, due to this poor literacy most individuals from these communities miss their health screenings and are thus diagnosed with late onset of medical illnesses that may have been easily manageable if diagnosed earlier.  With an improved medical awareness and stronger literacy, people will be better aware of health screenings. They will have better understanding of health conditions, need for compliance and what complications to avoid. Better medical information will create stronger independence and individual management of health. At the end, this will create a stronger patient physician relationship and a healthier community at large.

Through Jamii, we will bridge this gap of literacy and create a healthier community that will be well informed and more efficient with their health and medical management.
